Peter Capaldi has admitted that he initially thought he was too old be the Twelfth Doctor.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Capaldi said that he expected Matt Smith to be replaced by an actor who is more of a similar age.

“I wouldn’t have thought it would be me - because of my age,” he confessed. “I would have thought they were automatically heading younger.”

However, he added: “I’m technically too young for the part, because he’s over 2,000 years old.”

Doctor Who Series 8 will begin on Saturday, 23rd August on BBC One.

eBay has compiled a list of the top 10 Doctors in order of merchandise sales.

Top of the list is Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, whose 7 year run created enough memorabilia to outsell the other Doctors by 203%.

The more recent Doctors, David Tennant and Matt Smith fall into 2nd and 3rd place, while Peter Capaldi is down in 10th place.

Here is the list of the top 10 Doctors in order of sales:

1. Tom Baker
2. David Tennant
3. Matt Smith
4. William Hartnell
5. Paul McGann
6. Patrick Troughton
7. Sylvester McCoy
8. Colin Baker
9. Peter Davison
10. Peter Capaldi

eBay spokesperson, Laura Wilkinson-Rea said: “It really speaks to Tom Baker’s iconic Doctor Who status that he continues to outsell the other Doctors. It also seems like the Universe is safe for now as the Doctors are far outselling the baddies.

“For example, ebay.co.uk currently lists 200,000 items of Doctor Who merchandise - totally dwarfing the Dalek’s 14,000. We’d be fascinated to see what spin Malcolm Tucker would put on this!”
