The Tenth Doctor The Eleventh Doctor

Matt Smith has said the “best storytelling” of his Doctor Who era was in Series 5.

Speaking on a panel at Wizard World Con, Smith said: “For me the best storytelling was in Series 5. It had great adventure and great clarity and I loved that whole idea about the Pandorica and the Big Bang. It was the one I connected with most.”

On the twists in Series 6, he said: “I think in terms of revelations, River being Amy’s daughter was a bit ‘what the hell?!’”

The Eleventh Doctor was known for making big speeches and Smith again gave preference to a speech from Series 5: “I think it has to be when I was talking to the spaceships in ‘The Pandorica Opens.’”

He added: “Looking back, I think some of my best work was in my first series because I was actually taking real risks and that was a real moment.”

Karen Gillan has said that returning for ‘The Time of the Doctor’ was a “surreal experience”.

Gillan reprised her role as Amy Pond for Matt Smith’s final Doctor Who episode as The Doctor.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said: “It was such a surreal experience. Because those were three very important years of my life on that TV show and then to go back and be on someone else’s TARDIS was a really weird sensation.”

“[I was] sort of… on the outside looking in. But also knowing that life is okay after you leave Doctor Who. It was just a really interesting experience and important to me that I was there for Matt’s final moments in character.”

“Everyone was crying! Everyone!” she recalled. “Me and Jenna [Coleman] were hugging. Oh my God.”
